Are Dachshunds A Good Choice For Small Homes?

Given a choice many people would prefer more living space but do dogs care? Probably not.

My early childhood was spent in my grandmother’s large 2 story home at the very edge of a little farming community in Iowa.

We had a big yard to play in, a big garden, a barn, a corn crib, a chicken house, a smokehouse, a cow and a big pasture for the cow. And, our family pet was a Saint Bernard who was never allowed in the house.  cute dachshund

This background doesn’t exactly qualify me to share my thoughts regarding sizing a dog to fit your living space. In the end, however, it seems like common sense could be substituted for experience.

When we looked for a perfect dog to fit our household of boys many years later, we picked a dachshund puppy.

We found him to be very smart and easy to train, very friendly and playful with our own children and the many others that came and went. He rarely barked, except while in a rowdy game with the boys.

He was easily bathed, he shed very little and the cost of his food was barely noticeable in a household that contributed a lot to the success of several grocery chains.

I’m sure he would have walked well with a leash except that we lived in the country and his leash was imaginary…. he was always within a few feet of one of the boys.

So, unless you are in a small rental house or apartment that prohibits dogs, It would seem that the dachshund would be a nearly perfect choice as a pet. Go for it!
