Special dachshund Emmett is 7 years old, weighs approximately 20 pounds, and cannot wait to meet his forever family! He loves snuggling up to his people, playing with toys, and lounging around in the dog bed. Emmett has IVDD and rocks a wheelchair, but he doesn’t let that slow him down.

Emmett does well around other dogs, both big and small. It takes him a minute to get comfortable around other pups, but he warms up fairly quickly. We are unsure how he does with cats as he hasn’t been around any since coming to the rescue. We wouldn’t recommend Emmett join a forever family with younger children, but he would do great in a family with older children who are respectful of dog boundaries.

Emmett does not have much experience being on the leash, but he does well during the brief times he is leashed. When it comes to housetraining, this looks a little different for Emmett. Because of Emmett’s condition, he does require his bladder to be expressed which may sound a little intimidating but is really quite easy! He also wears belly bands around the house as a precaution for any leaking. He sometimes rocks a drag bag too when indoors to protect his back legs from getting too roughed up when he drags them around. Emmett does well in the crate and doesn’t mind being left alone for a bit- he shows no signs of separation anxiety. Emmett has shown no food or toy aggression while in his foster home.

Emmett sleeps on a dog bed at night and enjoys lounging around on the dog beds throughout the day too. He enjoys car rides and behaves so well for them! When it comes to meeting new people, Emmett can get very shy and wary. Best practice for meeting Emmett is pretending he does not exist until he decides to come up to you, then he will allow neck scratches. Once you get to this point, you are all good in his book. He is friendly when it comes to new dogs, he can be a bit barky at first and super excited but calms down pretty quickly.

Vetting and Medical
In our care, Emmett has received all of the following: Vet Check, 1 or more Vaccines, Dental Exam, Spay or Neuter, Skin treatments/ infections, Nails Trimmed, Flea Treatments, Heart Worm testing and medication
Medically, it is important for Emmett’s forever family to understand what IVDD looks like for him. He drags his back legs a majority of the time but can pull them up and use them every once in a while. There are different exercises that can be done at home to help him strengthen those back legs more and more each day. As described above, he does need his bladder expressed as a result of his paralysis so an adopter who is either experienced in bladder expression or open to learning how to do it is required for him.
We depend on donations from caring people, like you, to make a difference in the lives of dogs. As an all volunteer organization, you can rest assured that the donations go directly to help the dogs. Thank you!

Special Dachshund Emmett – 7 yrs, 20 lbs.
Emmett is pretty shy, but loves his people hard once he feels comfortable. His foster mom reports that he was a little barky in the beginning when he was first getting used to his foster home and his foster family, but that has subsided over time. He enjoys toys, snuggles, and lots of quality time with his people. Emmett does require daily expression of his bladder (which is easy enough to learn) Adoption fee $150
If you believe you could provide a safe and loving forever home for this dog, please fill out an application with the dogs’ name on it.
*Be advised, we have a couple of volunteers processing hundreds of applications. We are unable to call everyone back as we do not have ANY employees. Our dedicated volunteers and foster parents will check references of the applications that appear to be a good match. At that time, if you are chosen, we will contact you to arrange a home visit.
The adoption fee helps to cover costs, as each dog is fully vetted, and treated, as needed to prepare them to move forward in their new life. You pay no fee unless you are chosen to adopt.
