I’ve known for a long time that probiotics are helpful in maintaining my Dachshund’s gut health. They help support immune system function, promote digestion and nutrient absorption, help maintain overall health, and more.
Probiotics are a supplement that I don’t consider optional. However, I don’t have a favorite.
For many supplements, I have a go-to brand, but for some, like probiotics, I like to switch them up – to rotate them over time so my Dachshunds get different strains of probiotics, prebiotics, and other gut-supporting ingredients.
A new one we recently tried is the PetLab Co. Probiotic Chews for dogs.

What We Thought Of PetLab Co.’s Probiotic Chews
I’m satisfied with the ingredients of the PetLab Co. Probiotic Chews. They meet my minimum standard for a probiotic supplement, plus they contain the unique ingredients Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), Galactooligosaccharides (GOS), and a synergistic postbiotic yeast blend.
My Dachshunds — Otter, Summit, and Gretel — like the taste. They not only eat the chews if I put them in their breakfast or dinner, but they gladly eat them as stand-alone snacks if I forget them at mealtime.
Some probiotics are too strong and give Summit loose stools, even when I’ve only introduced a fraction of the recommended serving. That was not the case with the PetLab probiotics.
Since none of my Dachshunds have allergies or skin issues, I can’t speak specifically to whether they reduce itchiness, paw licking, or other issues related to seasonal allergies.
However, I did comb through the reviews prior to trying the product and saw several dog owners reporting that their dogs did stop licking and chewing their skin and paws, and stopped having stinky ears and shaking their head, about 3-4 weeks after starting these probiotic soft chews.
I think it would depend on the dog and the severity of the issue, but there is potential there.

Final Thoughts on PetLab Probiotics
PetLab Co. is definitely a brand that I will add into my regular rotation of supplements.
The price is a little steep if you have multiple dogs, especially if they are over 25 lbs. The recommended dose for dogs 25 lbs and under is 1 soft chew per day. There are 30 chews per container.
That means that a container of 30, given at the normal dose, given to my three Dachshunds, would only last 10 days. However, because the dose for a 25 lb dog is 1 chew, and mine are approximately half of that weight (11-15 lbs), I only give them half a chew a day to make them last longer.
Yes, a probiotic supplement is important, but I figure they don’t need a full dose of the PetLab Co. product because they do get some additional probiotics in the things I use to fancy up their meals like fermented beet pulp and raw goats milk.
Those dog food toppers are missing the Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) though, and don’t have a high enough dose of probiotics.
