The KC has published registration data for 2024 and I have updated the charts to show trends for each of the 6 Dachshund varieties since 2009. A total of 17401 Dachshunds were registered in 2024, down 14% from 2023 but still 5,000 up from 2019 (pre-pandemic).
Mini Smooths continue to lead the registrations but have clearly peaked and are back down to 2020 levels. Mini Long registrations continued to grow in 2024; the only variety to do so and they are nearly 3 times higher than in 2019. Mini Wire registrations have been virtually static through the whole period on these charts (since 2009).
In the Standards, Wires and Smooths have both tailed off, with Smooths back to pre-pandemic levels. Wires continue to be the most popular Standard variety and 2024 registrations were double the level 10 years ago. Registrations of Longs continue to be the lowest and, if this was a British breed, they would be classed as one of the native vulnerable breeds (under 300 registered p.a.). The low volume of registrations for Longs and Smooths means they have a specific mention for low genetic diversity in the recently publish KC Health Standard.
It is also worth noting these Dachshund registrations within the overal context of KC registrations. Dachshunds comprised 9% of total KC registrations in 2024 and 72% of the Hound Group. In the 3rd chart (below), it is interesting to note that the Hound Group is the only group that has grown in popularity over recent years and this is largely driven by the popularity of Dachshunds.
