Adoptable Mix Slinky is a very special 4 year old pup who weighs approximately 20 pounds. Slinky has IVDD and rocks a wheelchair so he will require a special adopter who understands his differences, but that adopter will feel like they hit the jackpot once they meet him!
Slinky is dog friendly with dogs who respect his space. He gets along great with his foster siblings who keep to themselves. He is not crazy about higher energy dogs or dogs who get in his face, so he would do best in a home with other lower energy dogs or would also do fine in a home without other dogs. He has been around big dogs as well and doesn’t mind them as long as they respect his space. We are unsure how Slinky would do with cats or children, but we would recommend a home without young children due to his disability.
Due to Slinky’s IVDD, he sometimes drags his back legs around. He was looked at by a specialist to see if he is a candidate for surgery, but the specialist determined that he is not. However, he has been working extremely hard in his foster home to strengthen his back legs. He absolutely loves going for walks around the neighborhood in his wheelchair and requires an adopter who will continue these daily walks with him!
He does great on leash and does extremely well learning to navigate things like curbs, ramps, etc. Using the wheelchair for these walks helps to strengthen those back legs which in turn makes getting around the house and the yard without the wheelchair much easier for him. There are also special stretches he can do daily to help him continue to strengthen his legs. Currently, he gets around his foster home and the backyard just fine without the wheelchair but he can also use the wheelchair inside if it is needed.
Slinky is house trained and does amazing with this as long as he follows a strict schedule for going outside very soon after eating. His IVDD does not affect his ability to use the bathroom regularly at all. Slinky is also crate trained and doesn’t mind being crated at all as long as there is a nice comfy bed in there for him to take a little nap! He was put in the crate frequently when he first came to his foster home as we were trying to keep his mobility as limited as possible until we could get him to see the specialist and he never had any issues with being in the crate. Since seeing the specialist and determining that crate rest was not necessary, he has been given free roam a majority of the times his foster parents have left the house and he does wonderful with it. He has never been destructive in the house. He also shows no signs of food or toy aggression. He is very food/treat motivated!
Slinky absolutely loves dog beds and will jump from dog bed to dog bed throughout the day. He loves hanging out on the couch during the day cuddled up with his people watching some TV, so we can assume he’d love sleeping on the big bed too as long as some safety precautions are followed to keep him safe throughout the night. Slinky loves car rides and is the best boy for them! When it comes to meeting new people, Slinky is very wearing due to some mistreatment during his younger years. He will bark for a few minutes at anyone new. However if the proper steps are taken for a slow introduction, Slinky calms down and doesn’t mind the person/people within a few minutes.
Vetting
In our care he has received: In our care, Slinky has received all of the following: Vet check, 1 or more vaccines, dental exam, spay or neuter, Medication (temporary – like for acute infection), nails trimmed, Heart Worm testing and medication
Slinky was evaluated by a specialist to determine whether or not he is a candidate for IVDD surgery. Due to the length of time since his initial IVDD onset, it was determined that he is not a candidate. Slinky hasn’t let it slow him down!
